Frequently Asked Questions

Q.  What are the amps and voltage of the pump included in the kit?

A.  All pumps are 120 volts and have varied Amperage between 1.2 and 1.4 Amps.

How long is pump power cord?

A.  Pumps come with a minimum of 15 feet.

Q. What supports the backside of the waterfall?

A. Dirt removed from the pond area is used as a backstop. Some builders have used Building blocks, bricks, boulders, or additional dirt to achieve a taller waterfall. (Note:  Do not exceed the maximum height of 2 feet)

Q.  What is the recommended depth of the pond?

A. 12 inches is the recommended depth. A deeper pond uses more liner and becomes difficult for potted water plants. A shallower pond contains less water making pumps difficult to be efficient.

Q. Do you recommend a skimmer or a filter to keep the water clean?

A. Adding a biological filter and skimmer will ensure your pond stays clean and ecologically balanced. It is not necessary, but it will help keep maintenance down.

Q. Can I purchase additional stone and how?

A.  Local stone yards and nurseries carry identical or similar colors and types of stones used in the pond kits. Contact us to locate the nearest retailer.

Q.  Do the pump systems hold up ok with a late season freeze?

A. Pumps are not to be operated below 41 degrees F-Freeze damage may occur. If the pump is installed outdoors in a North American freeze zone, ensure all water is removed and the unit is completely dry and stored in a frost free area.  Consult the pump owners manual for more information.

Q. What’s the height of the waterfall?

A. The waterfall height is 2 feet above the pond waterline.

Q. What are the dimensions of the pond?

A. The pond size is generally 5’ wide by 8’ long and has a height between 2 and 3’ tall.

Q. What kind of Stone is supplied with the kit?

A. Stone type is determined by purchasing location in the United States.

Q. Can I buy two & combine it to double the size of waterfall & pond?

A. Yes, Ensure one liner overlaps the other at an elevation higher than water level. It is recommended you glue the seams for better sealing.

Q. Can additional items be purchased from L&W Stone?

A. As a wholesaler we will direct you to your local landscape supply yard.

Q. What kind of fish to put in the pond, as well as how many?

A. The pond is not designed for fish. Fish increase the biological load on the ponds ecosystem and requires a more effective filter system.

Q. What is height and length of the waterfall stream with the kit?

A. Height is limited by the amount of dirt available. The length is limited by the liner provided. Recommended height is 2’ and recommended length is 8’.

Q. Is there an off/on button on the pump?

A. No, Pumps are submersible and do not have an on/off switch.

Q. How big of a hole do I need to dig?

A. No larger than the diameter of the shaping cord. No deeper than 18”. If you want to maximize all of the liner, place the liner over your build site to test that you have enough liner over the top edge to allow the rocks to hold it in place.

Q. Does the kit come with a filter?

A. All pumps come with a pre screen designed to keep large object away from the impeller. All pumps are direct drive used to circulate the water and not filter the water.

Q. What is the difference between the pond and the Pondless kits?

A. Pondless kits have a filter basket, longer but narrower liner, more pebbles and cobbles, and fewer flagstones.
